Background about the repeal of DOMA:

The repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) marked a historic moment in the United States’ journey towards marriage equality. On June 26, 2013, the Supreme Court, in the case of United States v. Windsor, struck down key provisions of DOMA, which had previously defined marriage as a union between one man and one woman. The ruling declared that denying federal recognition and benefits to same-sex couples legally married in their states was unconstitutional.

This decision was a pivotal step forward for LGBTQ+ rights, affirming that all marriages, regardless of the genders of the partners, deserved equal treatment under federal law. The repeal of DOMA not only granted same-sex couples access to various federal benefits, such as tax advantages and Social Security survivor benefits, but it also served as a catalyst for subsequent legal victories that ultimately led to the nationwide legalization of same-sex marriage with the Obergefell v. Hodges decision in 2015. The repeal of DOMA symbolized a significant stride towards inclusivity and equal rights, fostering a more inclusive and diverse understanding of marriage in the United States.
